Long Answer Type Questions

Question. A person who turns a blind eye to a wrong deed is as bad as the one who does it. Discuss in context of the story ‘The Hundred Dresses.’
Ans. Maddie would be around when Wanda was being teased by Peggy and the other girls but she never stopped them from doing so. She did feel uncomfortable watching Wanda but she just stood by and did not take a stand due to the fear of being the next target. Most often, people who do such things like teasing and insulting others, do it due to the support of the others. These supporting people are equally responsible for bullying. So, although she was not a part of the wrong doing, she was supporting it because she did not stop it. This puts her equally at fault. If someone sees a robbery taking place and does nothing about it, then he or she is as bad as the thief. Hence, a person who turns a blind eye is also to blame.

Question. Tears blurred her eyes and she gazed for a long time at the picture. Then hastily she rubbed her eyes and studied it intently. The colours in the dress were so vivid that she had scarcely noticed the face and head of the drawing.
(a) Why was Maddie crying?
(b) Whose picture did she have? What was special about the picture?
Ans. (a) Maddie was crying because she felt guilt over making fun of Wanda along with her friend Peggy. She wanted to make things right with Wanda but she had already shifted to another city.
(b) She had the picture of a dress that Wanda had made. The special thing about the picture was that Wanda had drawn Maddie’s face in the picture and dressed her in a beautiful dress.

Question. Read the extracts given below and comment on the difference in thinking of the students with regard to a situation.
(a) Miss Mason stood there for a moment and the silence in the room grew tense and expectant. The teacher adjusted her glasses slowly and deliberately. Her manner indicated that what was coming.
Ans. In the above extract, students are awaiting a letter to be read from Miss Watson, their teacher. The students are in a tense mood as they did not behave well with Wanda and the letter was from Wanda’s father. Wanda’s father had mentioned about unusual things that had happened in the school, such as the students mocking Wanda’s name, which made them go for a change of school. So, all of the students were in a guilty state of mind.

Question. How did Maddie and Peggy find Wanda’s drawings which she had given to them? What were their reactions?
Ans. Both Maddie and Peggy heard the letter read by Miss Mason. Days after, they received the drawings from Wanda. Maddie pinned her drawing in the bedroom. The dirty bedroom came alive due to the colours of the drawing. She looked at the drawing and said nothing but felt that Wanda had been very nice to her. She gazed at the drawing for a long time. The colours were very clear. She hardly saw the face and head of the drawing. The drawing looked like her own face, her own self. She ran to Peggy’s house to tell this to her. Peggy also saw that Wanda had drawn her face in the picture. Peggy said that meant Wanda had forgiven them.

She never knew that Wanda had the sense to know that she was being mocked at. Maddie said nothing but she hoped to find Wanda. She wanted to tell her that they were sorry. They would plead before Wanda to not to move away from there. They would all be nice to her. She and Peggy would fight anybody who wouldn’t be nice towards her. They reached her house. But no one was there. the Petronskis had already gone.

Question. Around the world, a lot of immigrants move to developed nations. They face ridicule on various counts. Do you think it happens in our country too?
Or do you think Indians too face such issues when they go abroad? Discuss with Wanda’s story as an example.
Ans. Yes, I think such discrimination happens all over the world including our country. We have a lot of Bangladeshi immigrants in our country and they too undergo such injustices. Even Indians who go abroad are sometimes ridiculed for their accents, dresses and even names. Wanda came from Poland and so was made fun of for her long and funny name. However, when people are exposed to different cultures and nationalities they learn to accept others more easily and that is why Wanda’s family moves to a bigger city where more such people lived. In bigger cities, the people are more tolerant and accepting as compared to smaller towns. In smaller town, people are more or less similar to each other. Hence, when anyone with slight difference, comes in their midst, they consider him as strange and weird.

Question. Who is a better human being—Maddie or Peggy?
What attributes in the personality of Maddie make her different from Peggy?
Ans. Peggy and Maddie both were good friends. They studied in the same school and the same class. They were American girls. Peggy was a rich, pretty girl with blonde hair. Maddie was also a pretty girl but she was poor. Both, Maddie and Peggy used to make fun of Wanda. Peggy never missed any opportunity of teasing Wanda. Maddie was always with Peggy but she had sympathy for Wanda too. She did not like Peggy making fun of Wanda. She wanted to stop Peggy but could never muster the courage for the same. Maddie had a different temperament than Peggy. In the end when they came to know that Wanda was leaving the school, Maddie was affected the most. She came out as a better human being by the end of the story.
