Solved Unseen Passage for Class 9 English

Read the following passage carefully.

A FOR ALLERGY

(1) Like bad news and common cold, allergies can pop up when least expected. I suddenly developed an allergy to crocin (paracetamol) some years ago after having it all my life to treat everything, from headache to fever to toothache.

(2) A stuffed or drippy nose, frequent sneezing, an itchy throat, rashes, sinus, ear pain, 8 English–X: Term–1 difficulty in breathing, stomach cramps, itchiness, red or watery eyes are some of the common symptoms of an allergic reaction. Pollen, dust, polluted outdoor air, and indoor pollutants, such as dust mites, animal dander, cigarette smoke, and mould are among the common environmental pollutants, while other triggers include medicines, paint, and chemicals in cleaners and cosmetics, such as hair colour and skin creams. Among foods, eight allergens account for almost 90% of food allergies: milk, soy, wheat, egg, peanut, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish.

(3) Most of us wrongly believe that people with allergies are either born with them or develop them in early childhood. An allergy can develop at any time in your life and its prevalence among adults is rising. While most people who develop allergies as adults have experienced some allergic reaction—either to the same or an unrelated trigger before—a few have no history of sensitivity.

(4) In an acute immune reaction, the allergy trigger may be one, but the symptom is usually caused by a combination of factors. Stress, a sterile environment that prevents the body from developing immunity and lifestyle-induced changes in the body’s hormonal balance are thought to be some triggers. This has been borne out by clinical evidence that women are more likely to develop allergies at puberty, after pregnancy, and at menopause, all pointing to hormonal causes.

(5) Avoiding the allergy trigger and taking anti-allergy medication as soon as you can, after exposure to an allergen is the best possible protection. Since pollen levels generally peak in the morning, people with airway sensitivity and asthma should postpone outdoor exercises to later in the day or stick to exercising indoors, as deeper and more rapid breathing induced by aerobic exercise causes more pollen and dust being inhaled, which can wreck your airways and lungs. Since air pollutants tend to cling to clothes and hair, changing your clothes when you come home or washing your hair before going to bed, lowers exposure.

Question. What is the best possible protection?
(a) Avoiding the allergy trigger and taking anti-allergy medication.
(b) Rapid breathing induced by aerobic exercise.
(c) Washing your hair before going to bed.

Read the following passage carefully.

THE ROAD AHEAD

(1) Our opportunities are great, but let me warn you, when power outstrips ability, we will fall on evil days. We should develop competency and ability which would help us utilise the opportunities which are now open to us. From tomorrow morning—from midnight today—we cannot throw the blame on the Britishers. We have to assume the responsibility ourselves for what we do. A free India will be judged by the way in which it will serve the interests of the common man in the matters of food, clothing, shelter, and social activities. Unless we root out corruption in high places and root out every trace of nepotism, love of power, profiteering and black marketing, which have spoiled the good name of this country in recent times, we will not be able to raise the standards of efficiency in administration as well as in the production and distribution of the necessary goods of life.

(2) Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru referred to the great contribution which this country will make to the promotion of world peace and the welfare of mankind. The chakra, the Ashoka wheel, which is there in the flag embodies for us a great idea, Ashoka, the greatest of our emperors. Look at the words of H.G. Wells about Ashoka, ‘Highnesses, Magnificences, Reading 15 Excellences, Serenities, Majesties. Among them all, he shines alone a star, Ashoka the greatest of all monarchs.’ He cut into rock his message for the healing of discords. If there are differences, the way in which you can solve them is by promoting concord. Concord is the only way by which we can get rid of differences. There is no other method which is open to us.

(3) We are lucky in having our leader, one who is a world citizen, who is essentially a humanist, who possesses a buoyant optimism and robust good sense in spite of the perversity of things and the hostility of human affairs. We see the way in which his department interfered actively and in a timely manner in the Indonesian dispute. It shows that if India gains freedom, that freedom will be used not merely for the wellbeing of India but for Vishva Kalyana, world peace, the welfare of mankind.

Solved Unseen Passages for English Class 9

Read the following passage carefully.

THE IDITAROD TRAIL

(1) In the early 1920s, settlers came to Alaska looking for gold. They travelled by boat to the coastal towns of Seward and Knik, and from there, by land, into the gold fields. The trail they used to travel inland is known today as the Iditarod Trail, one of the National Historic Trails designated by the Congress of the United States. The Iditarod Trail quickly became a major thoroughfare in Alaska, as the mail and supplies were carried across this Trail. People also used it to get from place to place, including the priests, ministers, and judges who had to travel between villages. In winter, the settlers’ only means of travel down this trail was via dog sleds.

(2) Once the gold rush ended, many gold-seekers went back to where they had come from, and suddenly, there was much less travel on the Iditarod Trail. The introduction of the airplane in the late 1920s meant dog teams were no longer the standard mode of transportation, and of course, with the airplane carrying the mail and supplies, there was less need for land travel in general. The final blow to the use of the dog teams was the appearance of snowmobiles.

(3) By the mid-1960s, most Alaskans didn’t even know the Iditarod Trail existed, or that dog teams had played a crucial role in Alaska’s early settlements. Dorothy G. Page, a self-made historian, recognised that only a few people knew about the former use of sled dogs as working animals and about the Iditarod Trail’s role in Alaska’s colourful history. To raise awareness about this aspect of Alaskan history, she came up with the idea to have a dog sled race over the Iditarod Trail. She presented her idea to an enthusiastic musher, as dog sled drivers are known, named Joe Redington Sr. Soon Page and the Redington were working together to promote the idea of the Iditarod race, and in 1967, the first Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race became a reality.

Unseen Passage for Class 9

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :

1. Music is perhaps the most popular and widely practised form of fine arts, transcending all kinds of cultural and linguistic barriers. Any form of fine art is difficult to master and almost impossible to perfect and music is no exception.

2. Nature, it is learnt, has blessed almost two-thirds of the human race with musical ability of some sort. Music has the power to bring out the deepest emotions. It can make one cry or bring a smile on one’s face. In fact it is a magic medicine and many seek refuge in it when they are depressed or stressed. It is this intimacy that makes us listen to music or even hum or sing sometimes. This singing, or realistically speaking, expressing one’s emotion musically sometimes takes a serious turn. This desire to show musical expression in public then becomes a serious business profession. And from here the musical journey begins.

3. The desire to sing before an audience is innocent and beautiful and indeed it is perfectly alright to have such a genuine desire. But it is also important to understand that singing is an intricate art — a highly refined one at that, which requires systematic, prolonged and strict training, to be acceptable. This is an aspect we forget in our keen desire to reach the stage and perform. It is almost like preparing a formal meal for some specially invited guests, without even having learnt and trained in the basics of cooking. This is why we have more noise and less music nowadays.

4. These days almost everyone sings and it does not stop here. Most of us want to become professional singers. Result : a complete disregard for and ignorance of the training part, as the need is never felt to go through one and the urge to get to the stage and perform overcomes even a little desire to learn, if any. If at all, somewhere along the way one feels the need to gain some knowledge and training, it leads to hurried shortcuts and half-hearted attempts, best described as ‘Crash Courses’.

5. It is observed that those who have attained the so called partial success, suddenly feel that they lack the required knowledge and are not learned enough. But it is too late by then. It should be understood here that the stage or a performance brings in a different mindset within the artist. It is always recommended and rightly said that while on stage, cover the mistakes and weaknesses if any, and get along. But the contrary is true when it comes to acquiring knowledge and during the learning process. While under training, the student is expected to make mistakes but then rectify those mistakes under the supervision and guidance of the teacher. Therefore, it is good to make mistakes and then be corrected during the process of learning as this subsequently makes one flawless and educated. This is a different mindset. And these two mindsets discussed above, (those of a performer and that of
a student) cannot co-exist.

Question. What is best described as ‘Crash Courses’ ?
Answer. crash courses – hurried shortcuts and half-hearted attempts to gain some knowledge and training.

Question. What should be the mindset of a student of music ?
Answer. mindset of a student of music should be to make mistakes and rectify them under the supervision and guidance of the teacher while under training.

Question. Why is singing a refined and intricate art ?
Answer. music requires systematic / prolonged and rigorous training / to be acceptable.

Question. The desire to sing in public overcomes the need to train. Elaborate.
Answer. desire to sing before audience is innocent / perfectly alright to have such a genuine desire; music helps bring out deep emotions and reduces stress – a highly refined art which requires systematic, prolonged and strict training.

Question. How can we say that music is a magic medicine ?
Answer. music – magic medicine because it can makes one cry or bring a smile on one’s face; people seek refuge in it when depressed or stressed.

Class 9 English Unseen Passage

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :

Galapagos penguin–species of penguin characterized by the presence of a narrow C–shaped band of white feathers, that extends from the eye to the chin on each side of the head and a single band of black feathers, that cuts across the large region of white feathers on the breast. Galapagos penguins, the most northerly of all penguin species, inhabit the western part of the Galapagos Islands; however, some individuals may occasionally venture to other islands in the archipelago. Compared with other penguin species, the population is small, numbering no more than a few thousand individuals. Galapagos penguins are among the smallest of all penguin species. Their average size is about 53 cm (about 21 inches) in length and weighs from 1.7 to 2.6 kg (about 4 – 6 pounds), males are slightly larger than females. Juveniles, in contrast, have a grey head and black and white underside. They also possess white patches of feathers on their cheeks. The chicks are covered in a fluff of light grey downy feathers. Galapagos penguins subsist on small fish. Adults and juveniles are food for sharks and Galapagos fur seals in the water. On land, all age classes are vulnerable to the native Galapagos hawk and to predators, such as dogs, cats, rats and other birds of prey.
The young are produced throughout the year and nests are built with rocks and twigs or within lava rock depressions within about 50 metres (about 165 feet) of the shoreline. Most breeding pairs are monogamous for life, and prolific pairs can produce up to three clutches of eggs per year, with females often laying two eggs per clutch. The eggs are deposited in the nest within four days of one another, and incubation is shared equally between the parents. The incubation period lasts 38 – 42 days, after which both parents provide for their chicks by alternating feeding and guarding duties on a daily basis until the chicks are 30 days old. The chicks continue to remain in the nest when they are between 30 and 60 days of age, sustained by periodic feeding by their parents. Unlike most other penguin species, Galapagos penguin chicks do not join “creches” (groups). The fledging period continues until the chicks are 60 – 65 days old and they become completely independent at age 3 – 6 months. Galapagos penguins can live as long as 15 – 20 years, but most succumb to predation or to food shortages caused by the periodic, but dramatic, changes in nearby ocean currents.

Solved Unseen Passages for English Class 9

1. Worsening air pollution has been amongst India’s most pressing problems in recent years. Toxic air is not only a massive health and environmental concern, but also takes a huge economic toll: it impedes development and affects people’s welfare. According to the Health Effects Institute, in 2015, over 1.1 million premature deaths in India were caused by air pollution. In 2019, air pollution led to about 18 per cent of all deaths in the country. In the same year, it resulted in an economic loss of approximately 1.4 per cent of GDP. Studies have identified the severely negative impacts of air pollution across a multitude of sectors, including labour productivity and crop yields.

2. Indeed, India’s air quality has deteriorated exponentially in the past few decades, due to various reasons including rapid urbanisation, industrialisation and population growth. According to IQAir, in 2020, India ranked third amongst all countries in the world with the worst air quality. The Northern regions alone are home to no less than 13 of the 15 most polluted cities in the world.

3. Governments have initiated policy initiatives and created regulatory agencies and other institutions all meant to combat air pollution; they are highly inadequate. The current scenario shows a need for better and more effective ways of improving air quality across the country, especially in the densest and most populated urban spaces. One imperative is to ramp up the role of technology and encourage the private sector to engage in partnerships between each other, and with the government, to tackle air pollution. It is equally important to involve the grassroots, especially the most vulnerable populations, through community-based initiatives.

4. Any effort, however, must begin with accurate and timely information on air pollution. This will ensure that awareness is heightened about the magnitude of the crisis and its manifold impacts.Disseminating proper, adequate information should also seek to inspire individual action, and a collective commitment to a future where there is clean air for all.
